Here lieth the body of that faithful/ patriot and true lover of his/ country, Robert WILTON of Wilby/ in the county of Norfolk Esq/ son of Richard WILTON of Topcroft/ in the same county, gent by Anne/ the daughter of Robert BUXTON/ of Tybenham Esq his first wife/ was Hannah daughter of Robert/ JAY, gent by whom he left issue/ Hannah living at the time of his/ death, his second wife was Susan/ one of the daughters of Sir Anthony/ DRURY of Besthorpe, knight by whom/ he had three daughters Bridget/ Anne Elizabeth living at the time/ of his death, his last wife was/ Bridget one of the daughters of/ Sir John MEAD, knight of Lofts in/ the county of Essex by whom he/ left two daughters Joanna and/ Dorothy and onely one so much/ beloved son Nicholas. He exchange/ this mortal life for an immortal life
the 19 November 1657/ in the 58 year of his age/ RESURGAM
[Additional notes are included in the frame as follows: Robert WILTON born 22 July 1599 educated at Wymondham Grammar School and Christ’s College Cambridge entered Gray’s Inn 1617
In the Civil War he was a member of the County Committee, was a Colonel of foot in the Parliamentarian army, a justice of the peace and was elected a Member of Parliament in 1654 and 1656
When Wilby church was burnt in 1633 he was instrumental in raising money for the reparations
He built and endowed an Almshouse “for three of the poor and honest sort of people of the parish of Wilby”, now demolished]
