performing the duty of a midshipman on board HMS the Granicus/ in an expedition
against Algiers/ which was crowned with victory and the abolition/ of Christian
slavery in Africa/ his liberal and ingenuous disposition/ his honourable
principles and integrity of conduct/ which engaged the love and esteem of all
who knew him/ and endeared him to his father and his numerous family/ justly
claim this memorial of his lamented loss
[Britain adopted a new foreign policy of “freedom of the
seas for all” in 1816. The slave trade was banned at the Congress of Vienna in
1815 but Algiers was holding 1,600 Christians captive as slaves. Admiral Edward
Pellow took a squadron of warships to Algiers. Captain William Furlong Wise
commanded the 36 gun frigate Granicus, which left Plymouth on 28 July with the
rest of the fleet. They arrived at Gibraltar 9 August and were joined by some
Dutch ships.. The squadron arrived at Algiers 27 August 1816 and fired upon the
town resulting in release of the captives none of whom proved to be British.The
Granicus had her masts and yards damaged and lost 16 killed and 42 wounded.
Officers killed were Messrs William Morgan and W Renfrey, lieutenants Royal
Marines and Mr R Pratt, midshipman]
