The memorial inscriptions in the church, war memorial & churchyard at Northwold St Andrew in south west Norfolk

Home

High on the outside wall of the clerestory a commemorative inscription reads: “Offer forth to the sole of John Sterling”,which according to Pevsner is earlier than 17th century. Pevsner also says “The churchyard has many C18 headstones south of the church”. In a number of cases the burial register reveals their occupations. One who has no memorial is Robert Spinks buried 11 March 1810 aged 66, shown as gardener, village surgeon and apothecary. There are 7 victims of smallpox recorded in February and March 1788 but none has a memorial.

This roll was completed from a document deposited at Norfolk Record Office/ names and burial dates taken from identifiable headstones in May 1966 and subsequent finds on site/ Unmarked burials will be completed from church records when available from Norfolk Record Office April 1995”

Whether anything happened in April 1995 is not known. The above lists the names of 96 individuals of which at least 40 do not appear in the church burial register for the period 1861 to 1907

The church burial register for 1900 to 1950 indicates that Harvey Edward Gould CHANDLER, who died at Edmonton, was the first burial on 21 April 1917 in the New Cemetery, Northwold. This fact is confirmed by clerk to the parish council, Mrs J Cookson, whose register for the new cemetery begins with this entry.

One possible explanation could be that an earlier civil cemetery register existed for the period 1860 to 1917.
