Norfolk Epitaphs:Heydon memorial inscriptions

Home

Note Heydon is situated in a cul de sac and sometimes used as a film set and understandably we were asked by the vicar only to record what we could see without cleaning the inscriptions, consequently this survey is not as complete as it would otherwise be and may contain errors.

C001 [Tablet on inside east wall of bell tower] Here lyeth ye body of Nicholas/ STEWARD bachelour who depart/ this life on ye 2^nd day of Octob/ 1708/ aged 75 years/ He was bailiff to Erasmus/ EARLE of Heydon Esq for ye/ space of 29 years during which/ time he approved himself of faithful and honest servant in/ ye discharge of so great a trust/ and as a gratefull testimony of/ his love for ye family wherein/ he had so long served he/ bequeathed all he had except a few/ legacies to ye said Erasmus EARLE Esq/ who in consideration of his faithfull/ services caused this monument to be/ erected to his memory AD 1711

[Right hand panel] Emily wife of/ Wm Earle Lytton BULWER/ of Heydon in this county Esq/ gnddaughter of/ General Gascoyne/ of Childwall in Lancashire/ who departed this life Dec 28^th 1836/ aged 29/ To a wife beloved in life & lamented in death/ her husband inscribes this tablet which/ though inadequate to express the deeper/ feelings that are sacred to the heart may yet/ serve as a feeble record of his affection &/ his grief with the memory of her over whose/ early grave he mourns is associated the/ recollection of every quality that could bless & adorn domestic life/ possessing in a superior degree the graces/ both of mind of person uniting gentleness/ of disposition with dignity of character/ sensibility of heart with sound judgement/ & cultivated taste she exalted the softer/ qualities of the mind by an unaffected/ piety which shed a lustre upon all the duties/ of life & which led her to employ the/ short time allotted to her here in the uniform/ practise of religion & virtue/ may the tablet which records the grief/ of her husband present to her children/ an example to guide them through life/ in that path which leads to hopes/ beyond the grave/ and when in future years they learn/ to appreciate the loss of such a mother/ may they cherish her memory/ by imitating her virtues

Here under lieth the body of Erasmus Earle Esqr/ serjeant at law/ who by his knowledge in/ that profession was/ eminently serviceable/ to his Country and be                  / to his posterity/ He married Frances the daughter of/ John FOUNTAIN Esq who with Ralph                    / lieth here interred in hopes of a joyful resurrection/ He died the VII day of September MDCLX   / in the LXXVIII year of his age/ This monument was erected to his memory by his grandchild/ Erasmus Earle Esq MDCXC/ who died the 5^th of March 1721/2 aetat 55 and John his eldest/ son died 23d of Feb in ye same year at 32 both here inter’d

[Translation] Here lies Amia TAVERNER wife of Thomas TAVERNER Gentleman one of the daughters and co-heirs of Edmund RICHERS of Swannington admitted to a coat of arms. Born from the body of Elizabeth BEDINGFIELD his first wife which aforesaid Amia died on the 22^nd day of February in the year of our Lord 1630

C011 [Tablet on north wall opposite pulpit] Sacred/ to the memory of/ Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne BULWER G C M G/ youngest son of/ William Earle Lytton BULWER Esq of Heydon/ and Emily daughter of/ General Gascoyne MP for Liverpool/ born Heydon 11^th Dec 1836 and died there/ 30 Sept 1914/ entering the Diplomatic Service he acted as/ private secty to his uncle Lard Dalling & Bulwer/ Ambassador at Constantinople and afterwards/ held various official appointments in the/ Ionian Islands & East & West Indies/ He was Lieut Govr of Natal from 1875 to 1880/ and again from 1882 to 1895 when he was also/ Special Commissioner for Zulu affairs/ From 1886 to 1892 he was High Commissioner/ in Cyprus/ devoting his life to the service of his sovereign/ and the Empire he was in diverse circumstances/ and critical times distinguished as an able/ administrator and a wise counsellor throughout/ a long career/ Erected by his nephews and nieces

[Sister Gertrude was one of the last people to see Joseph Merrick “The Elephant Man”, alive as she attended him just before transferring to Hong Kong. She died of bubonic plague as a result of nursing a colleague who caught it from a patient]
