C005 [Stone wall plaque above pulpit] John HOWLETT BD/ preached at the foundling Hospital London/ XXIX years/ was presented to this rectory in MDCCCXIX/ by the Earl of Liverpool/ first minister of the Crown/ in approbation of his labours as/ a learned and sound divine/ by the steady discharge of his duties/ he gained respect and esteem/ and the house of God became more frequented/ by his contributions and exertions/ the church accommodation was increased/ and national schools were established/ to the necessities of his parishioners/ he ministered freely out of the abundance/ with which providence had blessed him/ a kind husband a warm friend a considerate master/ he attached to himself in no ordinary degree/ those with whom he was connected/ in the relations of social life/ he died in Christian faith and hope/ April XII MDCCCXLIV aged LXXXVI years/ and was buried in the foundling hospital

C012 [Stone plaque on east end of south wall] A large marble stone near this spot/ bore the following inscription/ To the memory of Matthew Pepper MANBY Esq/ lord of this manor/ who to the character of a brave intrepid soldier/ added that of an affectionate husband/ a tender parent and an amiable friend/ died on the 1st November 1774 aged 3/5?9 years/ also his wife who died 3rd Nov 1783 aged 43 years/ This historic record/ is placed by their eldest son/ George William MANBY Capt F R S/ the last remaining branch of a long line of ancestry/ and the last of that name/ possessing the Woodhall estate in this parish/ in the hope that his humble remains may be/ deposited as near his parents as possible [See S035 in the churchyard outside this wall]

It is believed that the loss of W5548/HA-Z was caused by a dinghy coming out of its housing and fouling the elevator, causing a loss of control. See “Norfolk Air Crashes RAF 1939-45” by Merv Hambling. Norfolk Aviation Society.

NB To the north of the west end of the churchyard is a new cemetery (alongside the approach to the church) which has not been included in this survey.
Memorial inscriptions have been compared with burial registers for the period 1813 to 1870 and discrepancies resolved where possible.
A similar exercise was conducted for earlier and later dates using a transcript of the burial registers prepared by Bob Gray of Hilgay.
