C012 [Ledger in Choir] Here rests/ in hope of a joyful resurrection/ the mortal part of/ John SMITH/ son of/ Hammond SMITH/ by Mary his wife/ grand daughter of/ the Revd Willm HEYLETT/ rector of this parish/ who was chief constable/ of South Erpingham Hundred/ and died a bachelor/ the 28^th day of Janry 1781/ in the 58^th year of his age/ These lines were not designed to praise the dead/ but to admonish those by whom they’re read/ what e’er his failings were let them alone/ employ thy utmost care to mend thy own/ let him that’s free from sin first cast a stone [A similar wording found on the grave of Peter Clarke at Worsted (1835?) is said to be a warning against gossiping]
