The burial registers for St Edmunds church in Downham Market contain few unusual entries apart from the entry for Thomas CANHAM a veteran soldier aged 70 years who had been at the siege of Lucknow (17 November 1857) and was buried 30 December 1896

C003 [Brass plate on north wall of choir] In memoriam/ Edward Charles King BEARCROFT BCL/ for 12 years vicar of Felmingham Norfolk and for/ 23 years previously curate of this parish/ chaplain of the Downham Union &/ chaplain VD 3rd volunteers batt Norfolk Regt/ who died at Felmingham vicarage June 4 1897/ and was buried in the cemetery of this parish/ R.I.P./ This tablet was erected by an old friend

C004 [Plaque high on the north wall of the choir] Sacred to the memory of/ Thomas SCOTT Esq/ of the Retreat in this parish/ formerly of the City of London merchant/ who died the 28th April 1821/ aged 58 years/ Possessed of an acute understanding and a retentive memory/ the extensive intercourse he had well with the world in his own and in foreign countries/ had enabled him to acquire a stock of information and experience/ which joined to a kind and amiable disposition/ rendered his society desirable to/ all who had the advantage to enjoy it/ he sustained a painful illness with patience and resignation/ being in possession of the christian’s sure hope/ and regretting only that she who raises this humble tribute to conjugal affection/ could no longer partake of his protecting care/ also of Maria Ann SCOTT/ relict of the above named Thomas SCOTT/ who died the 6th June 1842/ at the Retreat/ aged 76 years

C006 [Brass plate on north wall of altar room] The above and opposite windows are the bequest of Mr James OAKES/ native of this parish who died at Madras/ September 29. 1875 aged 43 years/ this tablet was erected by his/ family in loving remembrance

C007 [Stone plaque on south wall of altar room] In memory of/ Francis James/ son of the Revd James DASHWOOD/ and Sarah his wife/ Obit Decbr the 5th/ 1813/ aetat nine years. Early removed from bleak misfortunes power/ secure from storms here rests a tender flower/ short tho’its bloom the opening bud began/ to promise fair when opened into man/ sleep on sweet boy or now with angels sing/ for God hath called thee to immortal spring

C008 [A long brass plate beneath south window in choir] To the glory of God and in loving memory of Henry OAKES for 16 years rector’s churchwarden/ of this parish this window has been erected by his sisters Rebecca and Ann OAKES as an/ appropriate memorial of one rich in good works. He entered into rest Dec 7 1886 aged 66 years

Downham Market King’s Way Cemetery

The entrance at the west end of the cemetery is via King’s Way.

The following transcriptions have been checked against the church burial registers (BR) which account for about 50% of the burials. The remainder have been checked against the cemetery register (CR). In the latter case the opportunity has been taken to record occupations where they are mentioned.

The earliest burial in the King’s Way cemetery appears to be 1856. In this cemetery the Church burials are to the south of the central pathway. The whereabouts of the cemetery register for the period 1856 to 1 Dec 1881 is not known. Transcriptions during this period are noted to the effect that they may have been wrongly transcribed if the inscription is unclear. After this date an inscription which is noted “CR entry not found” indicates either that the person was probably buried somewhere else (and this fact has not been mentioned on the memorial) or that the inscription may have been wrongly transcribed or is so incomplete as not to be identifiable.

Each memorial reference consists of  a two digit row number and a two digit grave number.
The rows are numbered from the west end beginning with 51 in the area in which the two former chapels of rest are situated.
